Pilates is an organic approach to the mind/body relationship. An amalgam of both eastern and western disciplines, Pilates is both an effective and rewarding path to self-discovery. Emphasis is on core strength - the activation of dormant and/or under used muscles, core stability & balance, flexibility, and alignment. Pilates also serves to enhance one’s proprioception (the awareness of the body in space).
The need for numerous repetitions is unnecessary as each movement is done with precision.
Pilates is a facilitator in the process of “unlearning”.
Non-effective patterns of operating that hinder one’s natural movement are identified and released. Individuals learn how to employ the correct body mechanics, which ultimately results in the freedom of movement.
Pilates works eccentrically: the muscles are simultaneously stretched and strengthened which results in the formation of longer and leaner muscles. Hips, tummy, buttocks, thighs and arms are toned in this elongated fashion.
Appreciation for the human form, an ability to focus deeply, a willingness to learn, and respect for one’s own process are all that is required to become a successful student of Pilates. The benefits of Pilates are many:
•
Tones and defines “problem” areas such as the hips, under the arms, both the inner and outer thigh, and the abdominals.
•
Reduces lumbar and cervical back pain by means of strengthening the abdominals.
•
Identifies deviations in posture and gait (habits) which ultimately affect the health of the spine.
